Hardness of Charcoal Briquettes
Briquettes produced by charcoal briquette extruder press are supposed to be sufficiently hard. But it will be brittle if too hard. To make the briquette harder, a binder with higher melting point is required. If you use pitch as the binder, the most brittle pitch means the hardest briquette.
The briquettes should not soften at 140℉(60℃) – required by the French Admiralty. In generally speaking, good briquettes shall have a satisfaction behave on burning and should not soften on the hottest day in summer.
Density of Charcoal Briquettes
In many cases, the density of good briquettes is specified to be no less than 1.19. But here is a better standard. Make the briquettes’ density about equal to the density of the lump coal from which the slack used for briquetting was derived. This value may range from 1.1 to 1.4.
